Lying, favorite tool of despots!
Some men lie to find the love they have long sought. By lying, sometimes, you can seduce a woman, keep her for a while. But it is unlikely that this relationship lasts long in falsehood.
Some Heads of State lie to reach the throne, or to stay there longer. Sometimes, they fool the people by trying to create their dynasty, to impose one of their descendants or favorites as potential successor.
January 26th, 1986, at his swearing on the steps of Parliament in Kampala, the current Head of State of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni said, proudly: ‘’The problem of Africa in general and Uganda in particular, is not the people, but leaders who want to overstay in power.’’ Today, after 26 years in power, Museveni has forgotten that among those who think it is wrong to stay illegally in power, was himself, at the first place.
The octogenarian former Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade (85-90 years) spent 25 years in opposition before coming to power in 2000. Twelve years later, after completing his two terms, he never wanted to leave the presidential palace, persisting, come hell and high water, rejecting the advice of anyone, even that of his friend, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Ironically, in 2007, it was Wade who advised Obasanjo on how to leave the presidential seat when the extra mandate, to which one aspires, is a causing problem! Obasanjo released the throne, respectfully, head high. Recently, during the Libyan crisis that discharged Muammar Gaddafi, Wade went to dictate his wisdom in Benghazi, asking Gaddafi to leave the power, promptly.
But the stubbornness of the bald Gorgui (old man, in Wolof) banged against the unwavering desire of his compatriots who, without drum or trumpet, defeated his plans in the second round of presidential elections on March 25th, 2012. The boastful Gorgui Wade finally found himself on the sideline, outplayed by one of his adoptive sons, his ex-Prime Minister Macky Sall. Thanks to the democratic maturity of the Senegalese people. Honorable exit or dishonorable exit? Wade, disillusioned, had only one choice: Exit. Goodbye, Gorgui!
Like Museveni, Wade, Bob Robert Mugabe, Paul Biya ... etc. these clingers to power give the impression that with age, as human beings, we tend to forget, or we pretend to forget!
However, the last years of a long reigning leader, or an unpopular president, are generally the most difficult. For, attempting or rejecting the presidency-to-life requires special skills to adapt and survive to the temptations of these special final years. But it is better to leave the power before it leaves you.
The power, as women, cannot be kept for a long time in lies.
